What does it mean to live your leadership life to the fullest? Servant leaders are constantly raising the bar; working at being the best leader they can be for the people they are serving.

Over the years, I have encountered many leaders. I believe all of them were striving to live their leadership life to the fullest. However many of them were focused in the wrong area.

Mis-guided leaders focus their energy on abundance in the following areas:

  • Possessions
  • Position of authority
  • Experiences
  • Time on the job
  • People within their sphere of influence

These leaders feel that the more possessions they have; the higher they elevate themselves up the organization; the more exotic places they have been or miles they have flown; the more time that they spend at work; and the more people that work for them, will provide a wonderful life of leadership and impact.

Conversely Servant Leaders focus their energy on:

  • Purpose / Vision / Values
  • Lifting others up – Encouraging
  • Developing one’s self
  • Building relationships
  • Balance – Spiritual / Physical / Mental

Servant leaders understand that the keys to living a leadership life to the fullest is about being full of joy, gratitude, and compassion for those they are serving.

They insure alignment of their purpose and values with the organization that they serve. They focus their energy on stewarding the purpose, vision and values of the organization. They constantly look for ways to encourage people, while they work on building their own leadership skills. And they fully understand that leadership is really about building close relationships at a level that enables them to help others to achieve their God-given potential and live life to the fullest.

I encourage you this week to take a step back and evaluate where you are focusing your leadership energy.  Is it in the right places?  If so, great work, and keep driving improvement on your servant leader journey.  If not, don’t sweat it.  You can recalibrate.  Set aside time this week to really think about your own Purpose / Vision / Values.  Once you have that foundation, the rest will follow.  I promise your leadership life will be more fulfilling than ever!
